How to Select the Right Lining for Each Type of Wear in Mining

Selecting a lining to repair or protect mining equipment should not depend solely on the substrate material. The decision must also consider what is causing the wear, how the equipment operates, and the conditions to which it will be exposed after returning to service. The same surface may be affected by abrasion, corrosion, impact, or a combination of these mechanisms. When the lining is not suited to those conditions, the repair may lose effectiveness and require further intervention sooner than expected. Therefore, selecting the right solution directly influences equipment service life, maintenance planning, and operational continuity.

Key Criteria for Selecting a Lining

In addition to the type of wear, other factors should be evaluated before performing a repair:

  • The substrate material: rubber, steel, ceramic, or concrete.
  • The predominant wear mechanism, such as abrasion, erosion, impact, corrosion, or cavitation.
  • Surface geometry and accessibility for application.
  • The need to work on vertical, inclined, or overhead surfaces.
  • The time available to perform the intervention and return to operation.
  • The environmental conditions present during application.

Considering these factors helps identify the most suitable solution for each situation and supports more reliable, durable repairs.

When Abrasion and Severe Wear Are the Main Challenges

In equipment such as chutes, hoppers, cyclones, hydrocyclones, pumps, and transfer points, wear is generally associated with particle impact, sliding abrasion, slurry erosion, or a combination of these mechanisms.

In these cases, the objective is not merely to restore lost thickness, but also to protect the equipment, extend its service life, and reduce future interventions.

Our DURAFAST® line was developed for these applications using high-adhesion epoxy compounds that rebuild and protect metal, ceramic, and concrete surfaces directly on site.

Designed for equipment exposed to abrasion, impact, and vibration caused by coarse particles. Its formulation incorporates aluminum oxide ceramic spheres that provide resistance to severe abrasive wear and protect critical components exposed to highly demanding operating conditions. Its high adhesion enables surfaces to be restored without replacing entire components, while its mechanical strength helps extend equipment service life and reduce the frequency of corrective repairs.

When wear is caused primarily by fine particles, deterioration typically appears as gradual wall-thickness loss or localized erosion. DURAFAST® MX2 was developed for these applications, providing precise repair of steel, ceramic, and concrete surfaces. Its consistency enables controlled application even on vertical or overhead surfaces, facilitating interventions in difficult-to-access areas and reducing repair time.

When the Repair Involves Rubber Surfaces

Conveyor belts, pulleys, rollers, and other rubber-lined components operate under conditions of abrasion, impact, and continuous deformation. In these applications, the lining must provide adhesion while retaining enough flexibility to accommodate material behavior during operation.

To meet these requirements, our FLEXSOL® line is designed to repair and protect rubber and metal surfaces using high-adhesion polymers applied directly on site.

Especially suitable for repairing conveyor belts and rubber components affected by cuts, tears, or delamination. Its high adhesion helps contain damage propagation, enabling rapid restoration of critical surfaces and extending their service life.

When a repair involves both rubber and metal, the lining must adhere reliably to both materials. FLEXSOL® BF-02 was developed specifically for these applications, protecting transition areas and mixed-material components exposed to abrasion, moisture, and vibration.

For some repairs, application orientation is also a challenge. FLEXSOL® BF-03 has a paste-like, non-sag consistency suitable for horizontal and vertical applications, facilitating the rebuilding of pulley and drum linings and other components.

FLEXSOL® and DURAFAST® solutions provide reliable alternatives for repairing and protecting critical mining equipment through rapid, on-site application, with return to service in as little as one hour, depending on the selected product, ambient temperature, and use of the accelerator additive where applicable.

An effective repair begins by understanding what the equipment actually needs. We make it simple.
